The Venus Italica is a sculpture by Antonio Canova which was created between 1804 and 1812. This work of art depicts the goddess Venus bathing; in a demure stance, she conceals her nudity behind drapery, perhaps away from prying eyes. Initially, the sculptor had been commissioned to produce a copy of the Medici Venus, which had been “taken” under orders from Napoleon, but Canova succeeded in creating a wholly original piece. The vitality of the goddess’ flesh, and the fluid lines of the drapery Venus clutches to cover herself, create a masterpiece of outstanding beauty and virtuosity. The Venus Italica can be admired in the Palatine Gallery in Florence.
